About the GIRG Platform

GIRG is designed to use international comparisons as a tool to guide policy changes, improve governance, and enhance India’s statistical and data-reporting systems.

The 26 indices under GIRG are grouped into four main themes:

  1. Economy: Tracking overall economic performance.
  2. Development: Monitoring social progress and human development indicators.
  3. Governance: Evaluating transparency, democracy, and rule of law.
  4. Industry: Analyzing industrial growth and competitiveness.

Coordination and Methodology

  • NITI Aayog’s Role: The Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) at NITI Aayog will coordinate the entire effort, ensuring data consistency and accuracy across all indices.
  • Ministerial Responsibility: Each index will be monitored by a specific ministry responsible for checking data, reviewing international methods, and ensuring India’s latest official figures are correctly used.

Focus on Specific Indices

The initiative extends India’s practice of compiling indicators (like GDP, CPI) to global rankings, focusing on improving data quality.

  • Democracy Index: This is a notable index under review by the Ministry of Law and Justice. India currently ranks 41st in this index and is categorized as a “flawed democracy,” a ranking that has often been criticized by Indian officials.

This data-driven approach highlights India’s commitment to achieving better global standing through structured reforms.
