The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that India is finalising a $200 million Line of Credit (LoC) for Angola’s defence modernisation.
MEA Secretary (Economic Relations) Sudhakar Dalela stated that both countries see defence cooperation as a priority area.
This initiative was first announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the visit of Angolan President João Lourenço to India in May 2025.
The credit line will support Angola’s defence infrastructure, equipment procurement, and training programmes, symbolising India’s growing role in Africa’s security framework.
Energy Cooperation: Strengthening Economic Bonds
India–Angola trade currently totals around $5 billion, with nearly 80% linked to the energy sector.
India sees Angola as an important partner in its energy security strategy, and both sides are working to increase cooperation in oil production, refining, and logistics.
The partnership aims to promote sustainable growth and energy diversification, helping India secure reliable energy sources while supporting Angola’s economic development.
Minerals and Capacity Building
India is also expanding its engagement with Angola and other African nations through the National Critical Minerals Mission, focusing on minerals essential for renewable energy and electric vehicles.
Plans include joint ventures for mineral processing and technology sharing to strengthen industrial partnerships.
Additionally, under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme, more than 750 professionals from Botswana have been trained in India over the past decade in fields like defence, ICT, and engineering.
