Himachal Village Tumman Gets First Bus Service After 78 Years

Nearly eight decades after Independence, Tumman village in Himachal Pradesh has finally been connected to the public transport network. A government-run bus operated by the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) reached the village on December 31, 2025, marking a historic milestone in rural connectivity.

Historic First Bus Service in Tumman Village

For the first time since 1947, an HRTC bus entered Tumman village, located in the Karsog subdivision of Mandi district. Villagers celebrated the occasion with flower garlands, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and distribution of sweets.

For residents, the event symbolised long-awaited inclusion into the mainstream transport system.

End of Long-Standing Mobility Challenges

Until now, villagers had to:

• Walk long distances
• Depend on private or costly transport

This affected access to:

• Healthcare facilities
• Educational institutions
• Markets and government offices

The lack of public transport particularly impacted elderly residents, women, and students. The new bus service is expected to significantly reduce travel time and costs.

Trial Run Completed, Regular Service Soon

HRTC officials confirmed that a successful trial run has already been completed. Tumman village is located about 15 km from the Ani bus stand, and regular services are expected to begin once final administrative approvals are granted.

This follows a similar milestone in April 2023, when Talaihan village in the same subdivision received its first bus service after nearly 70 years.
