According to local reports, Google is in talks to lease land near the island’s airport for the project. Its location, close to both Southeast Asia and northern Australia, makes it ideal for real-time defence data processing and secure communication links.

The project will also include a new subsea cable connecting Christmas Island to Darwin, which hosts a major US Marine Corps base. The cable, to be installed by US company SubCom, aims to enhance bandwidth security and reliability, providing a stable backup when satellite communication is disrupted.
