Goa Takes Eco-Friendly Step with 5-Bin Waste Management Initiative

The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has taken a major step towards better waste management by launching a five-way waste segregation model in educational institutions. The decision was made during the 17th board meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, to promote systematic waste disposal and environmental awareness across the state.

Five-Way Segregation System Explained:
The new model continues the existing setup of four dry bins and one wet bin, but with clearer categories:

  • Dry Waste: Divided into four types — plastics, paper and cardboard, metal and glass, and non-recyclables such as thermocol.
  • Wet Waste: Includes food residues and biodegradable materials.
  • Biomedical Waste: Items like sanitary napkins and diapers will be collected separately to ensure safe and hygienic disposal.

This system aims to make waste sorting easier and safer for both students and waste collectors.

Additional Initiatives for Sustainability:
GWMC also approved the installation of sanitary waste incinerators and dispensers in all government offices for better menstrual waste management.
Other major decisions include:

  • Engaging new door-to-door waste collection agencies.
  • Appointing Project Management Consultants (PMCs) for service improvement.
  • Signing an MoU with the Directorate of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (DSDE) and the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to launch a Waste Management Technician Course for skilled manpower creation.

Legacy Waste and Renewable Projects:
The board also decided to remove legacy hazardous waste from Sunrise Zinc, Cuncolim, using an authorised disposal facility at Pissurlem.
Additionally, wet waste collection vehicles will be procured for Saligao and Taleigao with financial support from GIZ.
To promote renewable energy, GWMC approved biomethanation projects for compressed biogas (CBG) generation under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Collaborations and Recycling Projects:
Goa will continue its partnership with SINTEF, Norway, for construction and demolition waste management.
A new PET bottle recycling pilot project will be launched with the Village Recyclers Foundation to empower women’s self-help groups and promote a circular economy in local communities.
