Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman laid the foundation stone for Assam’s first Technology and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) University in Gohpur, dedicated to the memory of freedom fighter Kanaklata Barua.
The ₹415 crore project marks a major step in advancing skill-based education and pays tribute to one of Assam’s youngest martyrs who sacrificed her life at just 17 years old during the Quit India Movement.

A Vision for Modern Education

The upcoming Kanaklata Barua TVET University aims to prepare students for the future by offering training in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, Drone Technology, and Quantum Computing.
Spread across 800 bighas with a built-up area of 7 lakh sq. ft., the green campus will accommodate around 10,000 students once completed.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the university would be developed in two phases with an investment of nearly ₹1,000 crore, calling it the state’s modern “Nalanda-Takshashila.”

Strengthening Northeast Development

During the ceremony, Sitharaman noted that since 2014, the Central Government has invested nearly ₹21,000 crore in the Northeast’s education sector.
Key achievements include:

  • Establishment of 850 new schools
  • 15 medical colleges and the first AIIMS in the region
  • 200 new skill development institutes
  • India’s first Sports University and an upcoming IIM in Guwahati

She emphasised that the new TVET university will strengthen technical education and industrial readiness among the youth, boosting employability and innovation.

Kanaklata Barua: The Spirit Behind the Name

Kanaklata Barua, born in 1924 in Barangabari village, was a fearless leader in India’s freedom movement.
As part of the “Mrityu Bahini” (Death Army), she led a flag-hoisting procession at Gohpur Police Station on September 20, 1942.
Defying British warnings, she moved forward carrying the Indian flag and was shot dead at age 17.
Her bravery and sacrifice turned her into a symbol of courage and patriotism, inspiring generations across Assam and India.
