INS Gomati: From Sea Warrior to Museum Pride of Lucknow

The decommissioned Indian Navy warship INS Gomati is set to become the main attraction of the upcoming Naval Shaurya Museum in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
This museum, planned by the Yogi Adityanath government, will celebrate the bravery and legacy of India’s Navy — even though Uttar Pradesh is a landlocked state.

The project is expected to be completed by 2026 and will serve as a tribute to India’s naval achievements and technological growth.

INS Gomati: A Legacy of Courage

  • INS Gomati, an indigenously built guided-missile frigate, was commissioned in 1988 and decommissioned in May 2022 after more than three decades of service.
  • The ship took part in several major naval operations, including:
    • Operation Cactus (1988) – to rescue the Maldives government from a coup.
    • Operation Parakram (2001–2002) – following the Parliament attack.
  • The ship will now be preserved as a museum exhibit, allowing visitors to explore its operational deck, weapon systems, and control rooms — keeping its naval spirit alive for future generations.

The Vision Behind the Naval Shaurya Museum

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called the museum a “living symbol of the Indian Navy’s courage and commitment.”

The museum will:

  • Be designed to resemble a ship, complete with portholes, railings, and marine motifs.
  • Use eco-friendly materials, natural lighting, and cross-ventilation for sustainability.
  • Feature exhibition galleries, open-air memorials, thematic walkways, and a light-and-sound show arena.

When complete, it is expected to become one of Lucknow’s major tourist attractions.

Interactive and Immersive Experiences

Unlike traditional museums, the Naval Shaurya Museum will focus on interactive learning:

  • Visitors will enjoy 7D theatres, warship and aircraft carrier simulators, and digital storytelling experiences.
  • A special section will showcase a submerged model of the ancient city of Dwarka.
  • A dedicated gallery for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj will honour his historic contribution to India’s naval heritage.

The Naval Shaurya Vatika

Part of the same project, the Naval Shaurya Vatika will display:

  • TU-142 reconnaissance aircraft,
  • Sea King SK-42B helicopter,
  • And other naval equipment.

It aims to educate and inspire young visitors, helping them understand India’s maritime power and technological progress.
Even though Lucknow is far from the sea, the museum will symbolise India’s strong naval tradition and the heroism of its sailors.
