Praveen Kumar, the current Director General (DG) of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), has assumed the additional charge as the Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF). He took over the charge after the retirement of former BSF chief Daljit Singh Chawdhary.

The official handover ceremony, unusually, took place at a BSF camp in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, instead of the BSF headquarters in New Delhi, as both officers were attending the national police conference there.

• Experience: He has served in key positions, including a long stint in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) since 2009 and as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Naxal-affected Midnapore Range.
• Key Achievement (ITBP): He announced the creation of 10 all-women forward posts along the India-China border (the 3,488-km border from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh).

Predecessor: Daljit Singh Chawdhary

• Service: A 1990-batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre.
• Key Achievements (BSF): His tenure included leading Operation Sindoor (post-Pahalgam terror attack), establishing the first drone squadron and a drone training school for the BSF, and reviewing duties in violence-hit Manipur.
• Honours: He is a four-time Police Gallantry Medal winner.

About the BSF

The Border Security Force is one of India’s largest border guarding forces, with approximately 2.70 lakh personnel. Its primary role is protecting India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, and providing support for internal security duties as required.
