The Five Newly Recognized Products

1. Woraiyur cotton sari: A lightweight textile craft from the ancient town of Woraiyur (Tiruchirappalli district).
2. Kavindapadi nattu sakkarai: Traditional, minimally processed jaggery powder, known for its purity.
3. Namakkal soapstone cookware (makkal pathirangal): Handcrafted vessels prized for their heat retention and slow-cooking properties.
4. Thooyamalli rice: A native rice variety known for its fragrance, long grains, and high cooking quality.
5. Ambasamudram choppu saman: Traditional wooden toys carved and painted by local artisans.

Significance of the GI Tag

A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a form of intellectual property protection. It is given to products that:

• Originate from a specific geographical region.
• Possess qualities directly linked to that location and its traditional knowledge.

The status protects the product’s brand identity, enhances its market value, and provides economic benefit to the local artisans and farmer communities.

Tamil Nadu’s Position

With 74 GI-tagged products, Tamil Nadu remains one of India’s leading GI hubs, showcasing its national importance in cultural preservation and heritage-based product identity. The applications for these tags were filed by IPR attorney P. Sanjai Gandhi.
